Big Island police are asking for the public’s help in locating a 22-year-old Kona man wanted for attempted murder after he allegedly shot another male Sunday (April 11, 2004) with a spear gun.

The suspect was identified as Mark Dean Kalalau, of a Kauhola Street address in the Kaloko Industrial Area of Kona. Kalalau is described as being six feet in height, weighing about 175 pounds and having short black hair, brown eyes and a tan complexion.

Officers responded to a 2:30 a.m. call from a victim who said he was shot in the abdomen with a spear gun at the Kauhola Street address. Officers took the victim, identified as Wendell Kahaialii, 28, of no permanent address, to the Kona Community Hospital, where he was reported in guarded condition Monday.

Police caution residents not to approach Kalalau if they see him, but to notify police immediately.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call the West Hawaii Criminal Investigation Section at 326-4232 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.
