The Hawai’i Police Department is investigating a possible drowning Wednesday (July 1) in waters off the Kapoho Vacationland subdivision in Puna.

The victim has been identified as 64-year-old Hamilton Manley of Kurtistown.

Puna patrol officers responded to a 9:43 a.m. report of a swimmer in distress off Waiopae Road. They arrived to find that bystanders had pulled the man from the water. He was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 11 a.m.

Police do not suspect foul play. They have classified the case as a coroner’s inquest and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
