MEDIA RELEASE

A single-story house burned to the ground Monday (January 10, 2000) in the Fern Forest subdivision of Puna.

The fire started when the occupant, identified as John Barton, 63, tried to light a propane refrigerator. The wooden house, located on Ohialani Street, was destroyed, and four vehicles parked on the property were damaged.

There was no immediate estimate of damages. Barton was injured slightly while escaping the blaze, but he declined medical attention.

The house is owned by Joseph and Beverly Chew of Hilo.
