MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

Big Island police have charged a 48-year-old Puna man for allegedly firing a weapon several times in the Kalapana Blacksands Subdivision on Sunday evening (May 28, 2006).

Paul Leon Olson was charged at 8 p.m. Tuesday with criminal property damage, reckless endangering, terroristic threatening and two firearm offenses. He was released after posting $4,500 bail.

Puna Police responded to a home in the subdivision around 7:15 p.m. Sunday. A 43-year-old man reported that Olson threw a large rock through a window in his house and then left. The victim reported that when he later went to Olson’s home to confront him, Olson pointed a firearm at him. Olson reportedly returned to the victim’s house later and discharged the firearm several times, damaging the victim’s vehicle. He then drove away from the area. No one was harmed in the shooting.

Police spoke to Olson by telephone Sunday night but the man refused to leave his Kalapana Blacksands home. Police suspected that Olson was armed and barricaded inside. Early Monday morning they activated the department’s Special Response Team (S.R.T), a tactical unit similar to S.W.A.T. teams elsewhere.

After a police negotiator established contact with Olson, he surrendered without incident. He was arrested around 5:40 a.m. Monday. Detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Section assumed the investigation, executed a search warrant at Olson’s home and recovered the firearm.
