Puna man charged with burglary 09-10-14

A 22-year-old man is in police custody after an elderly female reported a burglary at her residence in the Waiākea area.

In response to a 7:00 p.m. call on Sunday (September 7), officers determined that an unknown person had entered into her Hilo residence while she was away and removed numerous items of jewelry and U.S. currency.

Police recovered the jewelry belonging to the victim on Monday, September 8, 2014.

Investigation led to the arrest of Taylor Kalawe of Keaʻau at 10:00 a.m. Monday.

He was taken into custody while the investigation continued.

At 1:00 p.m. Tuesday (September 9), Kalawe was charged with first-degree burglary and second-degree theft. His bail was set at $7,000. He remains at the Hilo cellblock pending his initial court appearance scheduled for Wednesday (September 10).
