MEDIA RELEASE

Big Island police have charged a 50 year-old Puna man for an alleged kidnapping incident, which occurred in a Puna subdivision on the afternoon of December 3, 2005.

Detectives assigned to the Criminal Investigations Section late this morning (December 5, 2005) charged Darwin E. Barve, of Pahoa, with kidnapping, third degree assault, unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, 4th degree criminal property damage and interfering with the reporting of an emergency or crime. He is being held at the police cellblock in lieu of $14,000 bail pending his initial court appearance.

On Saturday afternoon (December 3, 2005), shortly before 4:00 p.m., Puna police responded to a report of female standing on the roadway in the Hawaiian Acres subdivision with obvious head wounds. She indicated being assaulted by an acquaintance who also took her vehicle. The suspect was located a short time later by responding officers and was taken into custody without incident. The victim was taken to the Hilo Medical Center by Fire/Rescue personnel where she received treatment for injuries sustained in the attack and was later released.
