MEDIA RELEASE

Puna police were called to break up a large unruly party in which vehicles completely blocked off a portion of 37th Avenue in the Orchidland subdivision Friday night (May 26, 2000).

Responding to a 10:17 p.m. report of a large, loudy party, Puna officers arrived to find that more than 300 vehicles parked on the roadway and vacant lots blocked 37th Avenue from Orchidland Drive to Laniuma Street.

A large party attended by young adults and juveniles was in progress at a residence on 37th Avenue. Residents arriving home at other homes on the road were not able to get through the street, prompting numerous calls to the police.

More than 40 vehicles were cited and numerous vehicles towed from the area for blocking the roadway. As the patrol officers attempted to clear the roadway, rocks were thrown at them. Police made four arrests for littering, public drinking, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct,

Puna Police also made three DUI arrests stemming from the party. One of the arrests was made after a traffic accident in which the juvenile driver of a pickup truck sheared a HELCO power pole on Highway 130 near the two-mile marker, causing a power outage and blocking the highway for most of Saturday morning.

The female adult responsible for the party was subsequently cited for disorderly conduct and summoned to appear in the Puna District Court.
