MEDIA RELEASE

Two armed suspects tried to rob a store Monday (January 17, 2000) in Glenwood, Puna, but fled empty-handed after they were unable to open the cash register.

Responding to a 4:50 p.m. call, Puna police determined that two males, one armed with a shotgun and the other with a large knife, entered the Akatsuka Orchid Gardens on the Volcano Highway and demanded money from two female employees. The employees convinced the robbers they couldn’t open the cash register. After one of the suspects tried and failed to open the register, the two fled on foot in the mauka direction.

Both of the suspects, described as possibly Caucasians in their late teens or early 20s, were wearing ski masks.

One was described as being about 5-feet-5 in height with a slim build. The other was described as being about 5-feet-10 in height and heavy set.

The case has been classified as an attempted robbery, and the investigation is continuing.
