MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

Big Island police have arrested a 16-year-old Puna youth and charged him in the robbery last week of the Kalani Honua Gift Shop.

At 12:05 p.m. Wednesday (March 1, 2000), police arrested the suspect on Mapuana Boulevard in the Kalapana Seaview subdivision.

He was later charged with first-degree robbery, being a runaway, third-degree promotion of detrimental drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The suspect has been remanded to the custody of the family court.

On Thursday afternoon, a suspect walked into the gift shop wielding a machete and demanded money from the cashier. The suspect then left on foot in an unknown direction with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Because the suspect is a juvenile, police are withholding his name.
