West Hawaii Criminal Investigation Section detectives charged a 22-year-old Kona man with assault Wednesday (April 14, 2004) for allegedly shooting another male with a spear gun.

At 12:15 p.m., detectives charged Markdean Kalalau Jr., of a Kauhola Street address in the Kaloko Industrial Park, with first-degree assault and second-degree assault.

Kalalau is being held in the Kona police cellblock in lieu of a total bail set at $30,000.

Big Island police arrested the suspect for attempted murder after he allegedly shot another male with a spear gun in the abdomen on Sunday.

Kalalau was arrested after he turned himself into police the next day.

The victim, Wendell Kahaialii, 28, of no permanent address, suffered serious injury and was last reported in guarded condition at the Kona Community Hospital.
