MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

Police arrested and charged an 18-year-old Hilo male Wednesday (January 16, 2002) with attempted murder for the assault on a 29-year-old man that occurred on December 23 last year.

Police arrested Dion J. Alvarez at his 370 Ohia Street residence in Hilo for the attempted murder of Franklin Matias.

Acting on a tip from Crime Stoppers, South Hilo patrol officers and detectives from the Hilo Criminal Investigation Section arrived at about 1:45 p.m. at the Ohia Street residence, where Alvarez was reportedly seen.

On arrival, the officers contacted the suspect’s mother, who indicated the suspect was not at home. Officers determined that Alvarez was inside the residence, however, and surrounded the residence after the mother refused a request to search the residence for the suspect.

Acting on a search warrant, detectives later searched the residence as patrol officers stood by, and at 4:17 p.m., Alvarez left the residence and surrendered to Hilo Patrol Officer Joseph Feliciano.

The suspect was taken to the Hilo police cellblock, where he is being held without bail.

Matias, the victim of the December 23 assault, remains in a coma at Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu.
