Suspect Charged in Hilo Robbery 03/23/00

MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

A 23-year-old Hilo man was arrested and charged with a several offenses Wednesday (March 22, 2000) in connection with a robbery and assault that left his male victim in critical condition.

At 10:30 p.m., Hilo Criminal Investigation Section detectives charged Noah Dawson with second-degree assault, second-degree robbery and possession of detrimental drugs.

His victim, Theodore McCarty, 36, of Keaau, remains in critical but stable condition at Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu. McCarty was flown to the hospital suffering from a fractured skull and internal bleeding caused by injuries from the assault.

Responding to a 3:15 p.m. report Wednesday of a man being assaulted in Kalakaua Park, Hilo patrol officers determined that the victim was punched twice, fell down and hit his head on a cement walkway.

The officers later determined that the assault occurred in connection with a robbery.

The suspect is being held in the police cellblock in lieu of $7,000 bail.
