Suspect Charged in Puna Shooting 02/07/00

MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

Hilo Criminal Investigation Section detectives Monday (February 7, 2000) charged Palmer Gaylord with attempted murder and a variety of other offenses stemming from a shooting Saturday in Orchidland Estates, Puna.

At 10:30 p.m., detectives charged Gaylord, 35, of Pohaku Drive and 39th Street, with one count of attempted murder, one count of second-degree reckless endangering, four firearm violations, one count of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, one count of first-degree commercial promotion of marijuana, one count of third-degree promotion of detrimental drugs, one count of possessing drug paraphernalia and one count of cruelty to animals.

The suspect is being held in the Hilo police cellblock on a total bail of $72,000.

He allegedly shot Paul Olson, 42, also of Orchidland Estates, several times during an argument. Olson was taken to the Hilo Medical Center, where he was treated for gunshot wounds to his left cheek, left lower back and the back of his scalp and later released.

During the incident, Gaylord also allegedly shot and killed a goat.
