MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

Hilo Criminal Investigation Section detectives charged a 49-year-old Puna man Sunday (March 18, 2001) with second-degree attempted murder for the severe beating of a woman Friday.

At 11:40 a.m., detectives charged Allen Alani Aku, 49, of Kahakai Boulevard. Aku is being held in the Hilo police cellblock without bail.

The victim, a 40-year-old woman, was reported still critical condition Sunday at Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu, where she had undergone surgery for severe injuries.

Puna police arrested the suspect on Friday evening after responding to a call that a woman was being assaulted alongside the Puna Post Office road.

The victim, who suffered injuries to her face and head, was taken to the Hilo Medical Center and later flown to Queen’s.
