MEDIA RELEASE

Hilo Vice Section officers arrested two persons Thursday (December 14, 2000) in a raid on a Hilo home.

At 1:30 p.m., officers raided a residence at 389 Iloko Street and arrested a 33-year-old male from that address and a 30-year-old male from Volcano.

Upon the officers’ arrival, the 33-year-old male pulled a loaded handgun from his waistband and fled on foot. A foot chase ensued throughout the neighborhood and the male party was apprehended. 1.3 grams of crystal methamphetamine, or “ice”, was found to be in his possession.

Police later found a loaded .22 caliber revolver, which was discarded by the male during the chase.

A search of the residence resulted in the recovery of drug paraphernalia, including “ice” pipes and ammunition.

The male party is being held in custody pending further investigation. Police are also discussing the investigation with federal authorities and seeking federal charges.

The 30-year-old male was arrested for promoting a detrimental drug after he was found to have one gram of marijuana in his possession. He has been released from police custody, pending further investigation.

Lieutenant Henry Tavares, of the Vice Section, said police will continue working with federal authorities in seeking the maximum penalty for persons arrested for distributing narcotics, especially when firearms are found.
