MEDIA RELEASE

An unidentified male died of injuries he suffered in a motor scooter crash late Sunday (May 1, 2005) on Honokohau Boat Ramp Road.

Responding to an 11:26 p.m. call, Kona patrol officers determined that the man was riding his Hyosung motor scooter east on the Honokohau Boat Ramp Road when he lost control, fell over and hit his head on the pavement.

The victim, who wasn’t wearing a helmet, was taken to the Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:15 a.m.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death and are trying to identify the victim. Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the accident.

Anyone who may have information about the incident or who may know the victim’s identity is asked to call Officer Marvin Troutman of the TEU at 326-4646, Ext. 229, or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.

Sunday’s death was the 15th traffic fatality on the Big Island so far this year, compared with 17 at the same time last year.
