MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

The results of an autopsy conducted Sunday (August 1, 1999) determined that an elderly woman may have drowned Friday night in waters off a Waikoloa resort hotel.

The autopsy determined there was no evidence of foul play in the death of Asako Murata, 74, a visitor from Kyoto, Japan, and that the autopsy results were consistent with drowning.

Police are awaiting a full autopsy report pending the results of toxicological tests.

Murata was visiting the South Kohala resort with family members. While at the hotel, family members reported her missing to hotel personnel, and a search for the victim began at 9 p.m.

Shortly before midnight, the victim’s body was found floating offshore.
