MEDIA RELEASE

Hawaii Police Department officers in the South Kohala District closed a portion of Waikoloa Road on Sunday, January 22, 2006, due to hazardous conditions.

Responding to a 9:19 p.m. call, officers found that a heavy rain shower caused material from the shoulder of Waikoloa Road to wash out and spill onto the roadway creating a hazard between the 8 and 10 mile markers.

Hawaii County Public Works personnel responded with barricades to close the road and heavy equipment to clean up the debris.

Drivers are urged to use caution in the area as portions of the shoulder of Waikoloa Road may have developed ruts where material has washed away. Public Works personnel have placed warning barricades in the affected areas.

Waikoloa Road re-opened on Monday, January 23, 2006 at about 3:20 a.m.
