A 66-year-old Kona woman was reported in critical condition Monday (December 3, 2001) at Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu after she was struck by a police car in Kona.

The victim, identified as Gabina Makil, of Captain Cook, was flown to Queen’s on Sunday, where she was confined with head injuries.

Responding to a 6:21 p.m. call Sunday, police determined that Makil was crossing Mamalahoa Highway in a marked crosswalk in front of the Central Kona Union Church in Kealakekua when she was hit by a southbound marked police vehicle driven by patrol officer Calvin Sasaki, who was on duty at the time.

The victim was taken to Kona Community Hospital for treatment and later flown to Honolulu.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a standard negligent injury investigation into the accident.
