MEDIA RELEASE

Hilo police Friday (April 19, 2002) arrested a 28-year-old suspect on a warrant for violating his parole.

The suspect, identified as Wendell N. Tangaro, of no permanent address, was served with a warrant at the Hilo Medical Center, where is recovering from a gunshot wound to his upper left torso. He remains confined at the hospital under police guard.

Tangaro was shot and wounded by a South Hilo Patrol officer who had responded with others to a 3:12 a.m. report Wednesday of a theft in progress at a laundromat on Shipman Street across from the Hilo Armory.

Tangaro had been placed on parole in January 2000 after being convicted of first-degree robbery in April 1996. His maximum parole term was set for March 30, 2007.

On March 21, 2002, however, his parole was revoked and a warrant was issued for his arrest after he had failed to maintain attendance at out-patient treatment programs, failed to report to his parole supervisor as instructed and admitted to using methampehtamine, an illegal drug.
