During the week of March 7, 2016, through March 13, 2016, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 27 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Nine of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 231 DUI arrests compared with 189 during the same period last year, an increase of 22.2 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 274 major accidents so far this year compared with 292 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.2 percent.
So far this year, there have been four fatal crashes on Hawaiʻi Island (one of which had multiple deaths), resulting in five fatalities, compared with three fatal crashes (one of which had multiple deaths), resulting in five fatalities, during the same period last year. This represents an increase of 33.3 percent for fatal crashes.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
