A Hilo man is being held on a terroristic threatening charge in connection with a confrontation Thursday (May 14) in Hilo.

At 8:12 a.m. Thursday, South Hilo Patrol officers responded to a report that a man had brandished a knife and firearm during a verbal argument and threatened a 42-year-old Hilo man and a 62-year old Hilo woman at the intersection of Ponahawai Street and Kilauea Avenue.

A few minutes later, police located the suspect, 20-year-old Paiea Young, at his Haili Street apartment. He was arrested and taken to the Hilo police cellblock while detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Section continued the investigation.

Detectives served a search warrant on Young’s apartment and recovered a bb gun and a knife matching the description of the one used in the confrontation. At 3:30 p.m. Friday, Young was charged with first-degree terroristic threatening. His bail was set at $5,000.

He remains at the cellblock pending his initial court appearance scheduled for Monday (May 18).
