During the week of October 14, through October 20, 2024, Hawai‘i Island police arrested 17 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Seven of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. Two of the drivers were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 787 DUI arrests compared with 780 during the same period last year, an increase of 0.90 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

Hawai‘i Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 787 major crashes so far this year, compared with 675 during the same time last year, an increase of 16.6 percent.

As of Sunday, October 20, there were 22 fatal crashes, resulting in 24 fatalities, compared with 13 fatal crashes, resulting in 14 fatalities for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 69.2 percent for fatal crashes and 71.4 percent for fatalities.

In 2024, the non-traffic fatality count (not on a public roadway) is zero compared to zero non-traffic fatalities for the same time last year. 

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
