During the week of December 12, 2022, through December 18, 2022, Hawai‘i Island police arrested 19 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One of the drivers was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 948 DUI arrests compared with 1,037 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8.6 percent. The number of arrests by district were:

There have been 812 major accidents so far this year compared with 786 during the same period last year, an increase of 3.3 percent.

To date, there have been 32 fatal crashes (one fatal crash reclassified on 05/30/22 due to a medical condition) resulting in 34 fatalities (one of which had multiple deaths, and one reclassified due to a medical condition), compared with 25 fatal crashes, resulting in 25 fatalities for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 28 percent for fatal crashes, and 36 percent for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
