Hawai‘i Island police have charged a 35-year-old Hilo man with felony assault and related charges stemming from an incident that took place Thursday afternoon in Hilo.

Shortly after 4 p.m. on February 25, 2021, Hilo police responded to a report of a woman with stab wounds and lacerations at Hilo Medical Center. A 30-year-old woman reported that during an argument with her boyfriend, Nathan Keanini Camacho, he struck the back of her head with a closed fist, then broke a large glass smoking pipe and stabbed her multiple times with it. The woman also reported that Camacho threatened to shove the broken pipe down her throat. After being treated for injuries to her arm and ear, she was released.

Camacho was later arrested without incident and was held at the police cellblock while detectives from the Area I Juvenile Aid Section continued their investigation. After conferring with county prosecutors, detectives charged Camacho on Friday, February 26, with assault, terroristic threatening, promotion of a dangerous drug, and abuse of a family or household member. His bail was set at $35,000 and he remains in police custody until his preliminary hearing, which is scheduled for Monday March 1.
