Media Release

During the week of February 21, 2022, through February 27, 2022, Hawai‘i Island police arrested 18 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One of the drivers was under the age of 21.  

So far this year, there have been 184 DUI arrests compared with 200 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 113 major accidents so far this year compared with 120 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5.8 percent.

To date, there were 6 fatal crashes, resulting in 8 fatalities (one of which had multiple deaths), compared with 5 fatal crashes, resulting in 5 fatalities for the same time last year. This represents is an increase of 20 percent for fatal crashes, and 60 percent for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
