On Wednesday, February 28, 2024, shortly after 4:00 p.m., Hawai‘i Island police responded to a report of an elderly missing man who was last seen in the area of the 800 block of Ainalako Road in Hilo. It was determined that 87-year-old Tetsuya Yamada was last seen walking in the area and had not returned as expected.

Due to his age, Yamada was considered endangered. Police and Hawai‘i Fire Department personnel conducted extensive checks in the surrounding areas, however were unable to locate Yamada.

A Nixle alert was disseminated requesting the public’s assistance in locating the elderly man.

On Thursday morning, February 29, at approximately 7:20 a.m., police responded to an establishment in the 900 block of Stainback Highway, after an employee reported an elderly man on the property.

Upon arrival, officers identified the man as Tetsuya Yamada, and determined he was in good health and returned home safely.
