During the week of February 26, through March 3, 2024, Hawai‘i Island police arrested 15 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One of the drivers was under the age of 21.  

So far this year, there have been 170 DUI arrests compared with 177 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

Hawai‘i Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 156 major crashes so far this year, compared with 163 during the same time last year, a decrease of 4.3 percent.

To date, there have been seven fatal crashes, resulting in seven fatalities, compared with four fatal crashes, resulting in five fatalities (one of which had multiple deaths) for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 75 percent for fatal crashes and 40 percent for fatalities.

In 2024, the non-traffic fatality count (not on a public roadway) is zero compared to zero non-traffic fatalities for the same time last year. 

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
