Media Release

The body of a man discovered in a remote gulch off of Antone Deluz Road in Pa’auilo mauka on December 2, 2020, has been identified as 44-year-old Lester Keala Lorenz, of Honaunau.

Hawai‘i Island police detectives identified Lorenz by DNA comparison.

Lorenz was initially reported missing on November 18, 2020, after last being seen that afternoon on Mana Road in the Hamakua district. His vehicle was located on Mana Road, disabled, and it is believed Lorenz left the area on foot.

Police and fire personnel conducted an extensive ground and air search for several days in the surrounding area where Lorenz was last seen.

An autopsy was performed and according to the forensic pathologist, the victim had injuries consistent with an accidental fall. There were no signs of additional traumatic injuries and foul play is not suspected. The manner of death is classified as accidental.

Police determined the distance from where Lorenz was last seen on November 18 and the area where his body was found is less than three miles.
