4-01-22 Police Arrest and Charge Three Men After Investigating Rash of Commercial Burglaries in Hilo

Hawai‘i Island police investigating a rash of burglaries in the Hilo area during the month of March have arrested and charged three men for an array of offenses. Two of the three men are also suspects in additional cases still actively being investigated.  

On Tuesday, March 8, 2022, 32-year-old George Akana Cruz Labrador, of Hilo, was charged with second-degree burglary, first-degree unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle (UEMV), three counts of second-degree theft, and unauthorized possession of personal confidential information. His total bail was set at $60,000. Additionally, Labrador was arrested and charged on the strength of a no-bail probation violation warrant issued by the Hilo Circuit Court.

The charges against Labrador stem from two separate incidents. The first occurred on Tuesday, February 8, 2022, where Labrador was observed on video surveillance entering into a business on Kino‘ole Street in Hilo and removing various electronic items and other miscellaneous items valued at over $5,200. The second incident occurred on Wednesday, March 2, where Labrador was observed entering a vehicle on Kilauea Avenue in Hilo and removing items and US currency with a combined value in excess of $7,000.

In addition to these charges, police detectives have forwarded a separate second-degree burglary case to County Prosecutors Office for review. In that case, Labrador has been positively identified as a suspect in the burglary of a restaurant on Pauahi Street in Hilo.

On Wednesday, March 23, 30-year-old Antanacious Keoni Nau, of Hilo, was charged with two counts of second-degree burglary, second-degree theft, third-degree theft, second-degree criminal property damage, and third-degree criminal property damage. His total bail was set at $42,000.

The charges against Nau stem from two separate incidents. The first incident occurred on Monday, March 21, 2022, where Nau was observed on video surveillance forcefully entering into a business on Kalanikoa Street in Hilo damaging property and removing miscellaneous power tools.

The combined value of the damage and the items taken is in excess of $2,300. The second incident occurred the following morning, Tuesday, March 22, where Nau was again observed on video surveillance entering into a supermarket on Kino‘ole Street in Hilo that was closed, damaging property and removing consumable items. The total value of the damage and items removed was approximately $2,300.    

In additional to these charges against Nau, police detectives are investigating several other property crimes where Nau has been identified as the suspect. Upon completion of those investigations, they will be sent to the County Prosecutors Office for review.

On Wednesday, March 30, 37-year-old Alexander T. Keith, of Hilo, was charged with second-degree burglary, second-degree criminal property damage, two counts of fourth-degree theft, theft of credit card, and unauthorized possession of personal confidential information. His total bail was set at $8,750.

The charges against Keith stem from an incident on Tuesday, March 29, where he was positively identified breaking into a restaurant on the 800 block of Kilauea Avenue in Hilo and removing miscellaneous items. Keith was located nearby, shortly after the incident was reported, where he was arrested. During the course of this investigation, detectives identified Keith on video surveillance stealing a garbage can on Iolani Street in Hilo. He was also found in possession of a stolen credit card and stolen mail. The total combined value of the damage and items stolen in these cases is estimated in excess of $5,000.

In additional to these cases, police are following up on several additional burglaries and thefts in the downtown Hilo area.
