During the week of April 3, 2023, through April 9, 2023, Hawai`i Island police arrested 13 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Two of the drivers were involved in a traffic collision. One of the drivers was under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 279 DUI arrests compared with 306 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8.8 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

Hawai‘i Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 260 major crashes so far this year compared with 197 during the same period last year, an increase of 32 percent.
To date, there have been five fatal crashes, resulting in six fatalities, (Rvsd. 02/07/23: one fatal crash reclassified—manner of death was due to natural causes) and (one fatal crash had multiple deaths); compared with 10 fatal crashes, resulting in 12 fatalities (one of which had multiple deaths) for the same time last year. This represents a decrease of 50 percent for fatal crashes, and 50 percent for fatalities.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
