The Honoka’a Intermediate School HI-PAL 5 on 5 Basketball Intramurals Tournament concluded May 6, 2024 with the home team taking first place with a 21-19 win over the guest team.  The tournament, which started in September 2023, was organized by School Resource Officer Blake Ragocos.  “I wanted to give the students an opportunity to do something constructive during their lunch recesses,” he said.   “They really looked forward to each other’s competition and the championship game was a close one.”  The activity attracted 10 Honoka’a Intermediate School teams and involved not only student players, but also student referees and timers.

The Hawai’i County Police Department and the Hawai’i Isle Police Activities League wanted to send a big Mahalo to the Hawai’i Island Food Basket for the gracious donations of snacks and drinks and all the Honoka’a High and Intermediate School staff that assisted with the event.

HI-PAL (Hawai’i Isle Police Activities League) is a program by the Hawai’i Police Department in which Police Officers interact with youth in various activities as mentors.  This positive connection encourages teamwork, citizenship and responsibility among youth.
