A 26-year-old Kona man was arrested and charged for two counts of abuse of a family household member on Wednesday, May 25, 2022, stemming from an incident that occurred the previous day at a Kona residence.

During the course of their investigation, police learned that Miguel Cancino Magana had gotten in a verbal argument with his live-in girlfriend at their residence on Tuesday, May 24, that became physical. While the couple’s two-year-old child was present, Cancino Magana allegedly strangled the victim by placing both of his hands around her neck while pressing her against a wall, nearly causing her to pass out. He also struck the victim in the face and threatened her with a firearm.

Miguel Cancino Magana was located in Kona in the early morning hours of Wednesday, May 25, and subsequently arrested. During the conclusion of this investigation, four firearms and multiple rounds of ammunition were recovered. After conferring with the County Prosecutor’s Office, Cancino Magana was charged with two counts of felony abuse of a family household member and his bail was set at $20,000. His initial court appearance was  on Wednesday, May 25, in Kona Family Court.
