Hawai’i Island police have arrested and charged 20-year-old Cherish Anela Torres, with domestic related offenses following an incident earlier in the week.

On Thursday morning, May 25, 2023, after conferring with County Prosecutors, detectives charged Torres with the following offenses:

  • second-degree assault
  • felony abuse family household member
  • second-degree terroristic threatening

Her bail was set at $3,500.

The charges against Torres stem from an incident that occurred early Tuesday morning, May 23, 2023, at 3:00 a.m., when a verbal argument between Torres and the victim escalated to a physical confrontation while the couple were stopped in a vehicle at the intersection of Ohiki Street and Puni Makai Loop, in Pāhoa.  Torres reportedly pulled the keys out of the ignition, sat on top of the victim’s lap and struck him multiple times with a closed handed fist to the top of his head.  While attempting to have Torres removed from the vehicle, the victim was cut with an unknown type sharp instrument to his right forearm causing an approximate six-inch substantial laceration.  Torres also reportedly threatened to kill the victim.

Torres’ initial court appearance is scheduled for Friday, May 26, at 1:30 p.m. in Hilo District Court.

Police ask anyone who may have witnessed this incident to contact Detective Corina McLellan of the Area I Juvenile Aid Section, at (808) 961-2373, or via email at corina.mclellan@hawaiicounty.gov.
