Hawai‘i Island police have arrested and charged 38-year-old Alicia Jean Nakamura of Hilo with abuse, assault, and promoting a dangerous drug following an incident in Mountain View late Friday evening, July 21, 2023.
Puna patrol officers responded to an unknown type of disturbance at 10:45 p.m. on Friday on North Ala Road near the intersection with Highway 11.
Upon arrival, officers determined that a 74-year-old woman was assaulted by Nakamura. The victim reported that she was awakened by a child screaming outside of her residence and upon exiting her home, located a young female child on the street alone who said she was scared. The victim asked the child where her mother was, and the child pointed down the street. The victim then walked the child back to her mother where she was assaulted by the child’s mother, later identified as Nakamura.
The child and Nakamura left the area prior to police arrival, however were located several miles away hiding in the grass. Nakamura was arrested for assault against the 74-year-old victim, abuse against the child due to injuries observed on the child, and promoting a dangerous drug after police located a small zip-lock type baggie containing a crystal-like substance that later tested presumptive positive for methamphetamine.
Following a forensic interview with the child, the felony abuse charge was added after the girl reported that prior to being found by the 74-year-old woman, her mother grabbed the front part of her neck with one hand and squeezed to a point where she couldn’t breathe. The child was placed in the custody of Child Welfare Services for her safety.
On Sunday afternoon, July 23, 2023, after conferring with the County Prosecutor’s Office, detectives charged Nakamura with the following offenses and her total bail was set at $32,000:
- Second-degree assault
- Felony abuse family household member
- Misdemeanor abuse family household member
- Third-degree promoting a dangerous drug
Nakamura’s initial court appearance is scheduled for Monday, July 24, in Hilo District Court.
