Media Release

During the week of August 14, 2023, through August 20, 2023, Hawai`i Island police arrested seventeen (17) motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.  Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic collision. One of the drivers arrested was under the age of twenty-one.

So far this year, there have been 617 DUI arrests compared with 647 during the same period last year. This is a decrease of 4.6 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

Hawai’i Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 539 major collisions so far this year compared with 519 during the same period last year, an increase of 3.9 percent.  

To date, there have been 10 fatal crashes, resulting in 11 fatalities, (one of which had multiple deaths); compared with 23 fatal crashes, resulting in 25 fatalities (one of which had multiple deaths) for the same time last year. This represents a decrease of 56.5 percent for fatal crashes, and 56 percent for fatalities.    

To date, the non-traffic fatality count so far this year is 1 compared to 0 non-traffic fatalities (not on a public roadway) for the same time last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
