Boy, 17, killed in traffic crash 03-15-04

A 17-year-old boy died early Sunday (March 14, 2004) of injuries he sustained in a collision that occurred on the Pahoa-Kapoho Road (Route 132) in Pahoa, Puna.

The victim was identified as Kevin Torngren, of a Hilo address.

Responding to a 3:33 a.m. call Sunday, Puna patrol officers determined that the driver was traveling west towards Pahoa Village when his vehicle failed to negotiate a curve, ran off the road and struck a tree.

The victim was taken to the Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 6:48 a.m.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers are continuing an investigation into the crash and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Anyone with information about the case or who witnessed the crash is asked to call Officer Norbert Serrao of the Traffic Enforcement Unit at 961-2332 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.

Sunday’s death was the eighth traffic fatality on the Big Island so far this year, compared to two at the same time last year.
