MEDIA RELEASE

The Hawaii County Police Department’s Traffic Services Section and the Hawaii Isle Police Activities League (HI-PAL) are registering teams for a 3-on-3 basketball tournament to be played next month in East Hawaii.

The “Click It or Ticket” 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament, for East Hawaii teams, is scheduled for August 19-22, 2004, at the Papaikou Gymnasium.

Entries are being accepted in both boys and girls divisions for the following age groups: 8 & Under, 10 & Under, 12 & Under, 14 & Under and High School.

“We are using this athletic event as a forum to provide education and awareness of our seat belt laws,” Sergeant Randy Apele of the Traffic Services Section said. “Hawaii County currently has one of the highest usage rates in the nation for front seat passengers at 96 percent. However, youth in the back seat are belted in only at an 87 percent rate.”

Apele said, “Although our youth seat belt usage rate has risen in recent years, it’s still not enough ? especially since traffic crashes are the number one cause of death for youth.”

Interested teams should call Sergeant Apele at 961-2305. Because of limited space available, teams will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. The deadline for entry is August 13, 2004.
