MEDIA RELEASE

Kona police closed a portion of Kaloko Drive overnight after a vehicle struck and severed a utility pole Monday night (July 4, 2005), causing live wires to lie on the ground.

The roadway was closed to traffic for 10 hours while HELCO crews repaired the damage, and the road was reopened to traffic about 6 a.m. Tuesday.

Responding officers determined that the vehicle, a 2005 Chevrolet crew cab pickup truck was traveling east on Kaloko Drive about 9:15 p.m. when it struck the utility pole on the south side of the road about one-tenth of a mile west of the Hao Street intersection.

The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, a 39-year-old Kona male, was not injured. He was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and released pending investigation.
