MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of January 15-21, 2001, Big Island police arrested 19 motorists for drunk driving. Two of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents, and three were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 63 DUI arrests, a 22 percent decrease from the 81 arrested during the same period last year.

There have been 106 major accidents so far this year, compared to 148 during the same period last year, a decrease of 28 percent.

There have been no traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to two during the same period last year.
