A man who apparently drowned Saturday (January 20, 2001) while picking opihi in waters of Waiahukini Beach in Ka’u has been identified as Jerry Toshio Nakaya, 49, of Honolulu.

According to witnesses, Nakaya was picking opihi with friends when he was hit by a large wave, fell into the water and was swept out to sea.

The victim was taken to the Ka’u Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:14 a.m.

Police have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
