During the week of January 24-30, 2005, Big Island police arrested nine motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic collisions and two were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 45 DUI arrests, compared to 82 during the same period last year, a decrease of 45 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 158 major accidents so far this year, compared to 183 during the same period last year, a decrease of 14 percent.

There have been five traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to one for the same period last year, an increase of 400 percent. There have been no alcohol-related fatalities so far this year, compared to none at this time last year. There have been no drug-related fatalities so far this year, compared to none at the same time last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
