During the week of February 17-23, 2003, Big Island police arrested nine motorists for drunk driving. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic accident, and one was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 101 DUI arrests, compared to 130 during the same period last year, a decrease of 22 percent.

There have been 335 major accidents so far this year, compared to 318 during the same period last year, an increase of 5 percent.

There have been two traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to seven during the same period last year, a decrease of 71 percent. There have been no fatalities attributed to drunk driving so far this year, compared to one DUI-related fatality at this time last year, a decrease of 100 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
