MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of February 28-March 6, 2005, Big Island police arrested 17 motorists for drunk driving. Two of the drivers were involved in traffic collisions.

So far this year, there has been a revised count of 132 DUI arrests, compared to 181 during the same period last year, a decrease of 27 percent. The revised number of arrests by district were:

There have been 304 major accidents so far this year, compared to 409 during the same period last year, a decrease of 28 percent.

There have been nine traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to seven for the same period last year, an increase of 28 percent. There have been no alcohol-related fatalities so far this year, compared to three at this time last year, a decrease of 100 percent. There have been no drug-related fatalities so far this year, compared to two at the same time last year, a decrease of 100 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
