MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of March 13-March 20, 2006, Big Island police arrested thirty motorists for drunk driving. Fifteen of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes, and three were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there has been a total of 242 DUI arrests, compared to a revised total of 187 during the same period last year, an increase of 29 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There has been a revised total of 572 major accidents so far this year, compared to a revised total of 535 during the same period last year, an increase of 7 percent.

There has been a total of nine traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to eleven for the same period last year, a decrease of 18 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued islandwide.
