MEDIA RELEASE

A 53-year-old Hawaiian Ocean View Estates man died Sunday (March 26, 2006) from injuries he sustained in a one-vehicle traffic collision that occurred on March 25, 2006 in the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates.

Responding to a 9:30 p.m. call, (March 25, 2006) Ka’u Patrol officers determined that the victim was operating a 1979 Toyota pick-up truck and traveling south on Princess Kaiulani Boulevard, .1 mile south of Hawaii Boulevard, when the vehicle ran off the left side of the road and struck a tree.

The driver was transported to the Kona Community Hospital and later flown to the Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu where he died Sunday morning.

The name of the driver is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in this crash.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner’s inquest case and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Anyone with information regarding this crash is asked to call Officer Eric Cerezo of the Traffic Enforcement Unit at 326-4646, extension 229.

Being that this fatality occurred on a private road, it is not counted towards the islands fatality count.
