During the week of May 28-June 4, 2001, Big Island police arrested 10 motorists for drunk driving.

So far this year, there have been 329 DUI arrests, a 36 percent decrease from the 516 arrested during the same period last year.

There have been 974 major accidents so far this year, compared to 898 during the same period last year, an increase of 8 percent.

There have been 13 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 10 during the same period last year, an increase of 30 percent. One of the traffic fatalities this year was related to driving while intoxicated, compared to six at the same time last year, a decrease of 83 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
