During the week of June 6-12, 2005, Big Island police arrested 22 motorists for drunk driving. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic crash, and five were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 341 DUI arrests, compared to 474 during the same period last year, a decrease of 28 percent. The number of arrests by district were:

There have been 1,039 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,090 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5 percent.
There have been 16 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 20 for the same period last year, a decrease of 20 percent. There have been eight alcohol-related fatalities so far this year, compared to six at this time last year, an increase of 33 percent. There have been nine drug-related fatalities so far this year.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
