During the week of June 17-23, 2002, Big Island police arrested 22 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents and three were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 392 DUI arrests, compared to 356 during the same period last year, an increase of 10 percent.

There have been 1,026 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,086 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6 percent.

There have been 14 confirmed traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 14 during the same period last year. The DUI fatality count so far this year is three, compared to five during the same period last year, a decrease of 40 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
