MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of July 7-13, 2003, Big Island police arrested 22 motorists for drunk driving. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic collisions, and one was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 506 DUI arrests, compared to 465 during the same period last year, an increase of 9 percent.

There have been 1,203 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,151 during the same period last year, an increase of 5 percent.

There have been 15 fatalities so far this year, compared to 14 for the same period last year, an increase of 5 percent. There has been one fatality attributed to drunk driving so far this year, compared to five DUI-related fatalities at this time last year, a decrease of 80 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
